44 Magnitude Earthquake Shoots Los Angeles Area

Seismic Upgrade For Earthquake Early-Warning System

A light 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck in Southern California on Monday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The quake occurred at 9:25 a.m. PT and was centered about 11 miles east of Los Angeles near the city of Claremont.

The temblor was felt across a wide area, including downtown Los Angeles, where it shook buildings and caused some minor damage. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

The earthquake was followed two minutes later by a 2.1-magnitude aftershock. The aftershock was also felt in the Los Angeles area, but it did not cause any additional damage.

The earthquake is the largest to hit the Los Angeles area since a 5.1-magnitude quake in 2019. That quake caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the city.

The National Seismic Hazards Mapping Project provides an online web tool for determining the probability of a large earthquake within a given region. According to the tool, there is a 2% chance of a 7.5-magnitude or greater earthquake occurring in the Los Angeles area within the next 50 years.

California's earthquake early-warning system is getting a seismic upgrade that will allow it to provide more timely and accurate warnings to residents. The upgrade is expected to be completed by the end of 2024.
